PHILOSOPHY Music is a part of daily life and essential to the development of the whole child (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual). Music education fosters thinking, socialization, and communications skills; promotes self-expression; and stimulates creativity. All human beings are innately musical regardless of age, talent, or ability level. (From: Archdiocese of Louisville Music Curriculum Guide)
It is important to study music because: 1. Music can lift your spirits, decrease stress, and improve your health. 2. Studying music helps you become self-disciplined and can help you build skill and confidence. 3. Music uses math skills, such as fractions and counting, which can lead to higher math achievement. 4. Music uses your imagination and allows you to be creative. 5. Studying and playing music helps you to succeed in other school subjects, such as language.
In addition to all the instruction in music class during the school year, there are a lot of things that students and families can enjoy on their own to further the knowledge and enjoyment of music.
1. Do fingerplays and sing nursery rhymes with young children. 2. Listen to a variety of music in the car - TOGETHER! - not on indivdual i-pods; talk about the music and listen to everyone's opinions. 3. Attend musicals, ballet, concerts, etc. when finances and time permit. 4. Dance, play, and SING along with the music wherever you are! 5. See our links page for some interactive music websites. 6. Sing the songs and prayers during Sunday liturgy...YES!...Let your child see and hear you singing praise to God! Remember: "God respects me when I work, but He LOVES me when I sing!"
